CNA to CMA Training Program
Welcome to the CNA to CMA Training Program!
On this page, you will find a program designed to help nursing homes train Certified Medication Aides (CMAs). Several resources have been developed and compiled to assist with this training. These include:
- PowerPoint Presentation with a sample curriculum for CMA training
- Student in-course exercises to help learn the material in the CMA Training Presentation.
- Practice Tests and Answer Keys to help prepare for the state examination.
- Procedural Guidelines to help guide the teaching of some of the necessary CMA skills.
- Videos to help demonstrate some of the necessary CMA skills.
In addition to the resources on this page, other recommended resources for this course include mmis.ga.gov (which the instructor will need to be well versed in), state and federal regulatory guidance for nursing homes, and the textbook Hartman’s Complete Guide for the Medication Aide.
You will need to utilize your own exercises and skill demonstrations to teach the necessary skills. Students will need to practice the skills and then return via live demonstration. The state skills checklist must be submitted for a candidate to take the state exam.
Recommended supplies for this CMA Training Program include:
- Hartman’s Complete Guide for the Medication Aide. Sections 1-9 coincide with this course. Sections 10-19 are great resources for the CMAs to study and a source for ongoing continuing education.
- CMA Skills Checklist. This can be downloaded from the mmis.ga.gov website.
- Necessary equipment for the skills demonstrations. For example, nebulizers and glucometers and the supplies that go along with each. While pictures can be used to show this equipment, hands-on demonstrations would be much more effective. Also having syringes, saline, and a “fake” arm, so that the students may practice drawing up and injecting medications would be very helpful.
We hope these materials help you invest in your staff and train new CMAs!
